Shale drillers eager to move wastewater on barges

The shale gas drilling industry wants to move its wastewater by barge on rivers and lakes across the country. But the U.S. Coast Guard, which regulates the nation’s waterways, must first decide whether it’s safe.

“It may be hazardous,” said Commander Michael Roldan, chief of the Coast Guard’s Hazardous Material Division, stressing the word ‘may.’ “If it is, it would not be allowed to ship under bulk.”

Right now, he pointed out during an interview with PublicSource, it can’t be shipped by barge, even though there has been confusion in Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Ohio about whether it could be.

The Coast Guard has been considering whether to allow the industry to use the waterways for about a year, according to Roldan, who said the question came up when the Marine Safety Unit Pittsburgh -- the local office of the Coast Guard -- called the Washington office to clarify whether bulk transport was allowed after Marcellus Shale drillers began making inquiries.

6. Yeah, it is insane and they are linked.

Everyone negotiating in Washington, everyone working for Wall St, everyone who supports corporations exploiting the environment, all of them know what they are currently doing to the ecosystem for future generations, ignoring their pain for their personal gain.
For the ones who will be most vulnerable, for the ones who will be left in a world gone mad, they posture and worry over the imaginary "monetary debt" we will be leaving them.
As if they would give two shits about this digital debt. It doesn't take a time traveler to know that people in the not so distant future would gladly accept any amount of "monetary debt" in exchange for a healthy ocean, for Redwoods and Aspens, for the gifts that we have squandered and taken for granted.
We are now talking about leaving a weaker safety net to go along with it.
We have no sense of duty to the future, no idea of creating a healthier, cleaner & safer planet., no grasp on the simplest of liberal principles. That we will not forgo suffering now to double it on our children. That we will not profit from slavery or wasting the earths natural beauty for a few dollars. Yet anyone connected with Wall St is doing just that, every second, of every day.
We need to wake up. Someone has to wake us all up.

I'm guessing the plan will be to load up the barges in Pennsylvania, and float the waste down the river to the closest place where people are stupid enough to accept it. That would be Ohio.

These people are planning to dump the waste in the big cesspool we know as the GULF. In the past these people injected their wastes, but maybe the oil companies do not want toxic acids corroding their refineries. The oil companies are not STUPID.

roads, it would be simply *ideal* for them to transport it overnight on the
waterways ... and they'd no doubt be promoting how they are now needing
to "store" significantly less waste than originally envisaged ...
