Agence France-Presse reports on the no-nukes angle:
The World Bank Group does not engage in providing support for nuclear power. We think that this is an extremely difficult conversation that every country is continuing to have[," Kim said.]
And because we are really not in that business our focus is on finding ways of working in hydro electric power, in geo-thermal, in solar, in wind, he said.
We are really focusing on increasing investment in those modalities and we dont do nuclear energy.

(14,255 posts)Even from a purely soulless monetary viewpoint, disposal of nuclear waste and the costs of a catastrophe like Fukushima should make even the most greedy investor steer clear of nuclear power.
Charging customers upfront for paying for this stuff has started, I believe, to really empty the piggy bank that nuclear investors see customers as.

(51,076 posts)on paper it seems to be the only way to go and if things are going good its not quiet so bad but once accidents happen its all hell breaks loose. The nuclear power industry claims that its not killed but a few in all these years but every indication is it has been killing people since day one.
I don't trust them as far as I could throw a nuclear power plant. We had a run in with them here locally 30 - 40 years ago and the lies they told us then made believers our of us around here that they are not to be trusted. We stopped PSO from building a nuclear power plant near here. The only plant that was canceled after they'd already site preparations.
When things go wrong they have the potential to go wrong in a big way. I doubt anyone alive today will see the day that it will be perfectly safe at the Fukushima site.

(32,324 posts)Industry. I mean, for Pete's sake, nuclear energy doesn't emit harmful VOC's!
And in just a few hundred thousand years, the nasty half life isotopes will be fairly harmless.
