the 2013 - 2014 extent has not recovered to the 2011 - 2012 level, which found new August / September lows in sea ice volume.
If this is an extent peak and doesn't change, the sea ice watch for this season will start about now. It will be interesting to track the PIOMAS volume measurements for the next several months to see if they start moving early toward new lows. Until now they have stayed steadily above 2011 - 2012 lows. Hope for late season freezing and no cyclone activity this year.
