For Weed Control, Farmers Widen Their Arsenal of Herbicides

Farmers in the U.S. are using a wider array of herbicides, and more of them, in an effort to fight the war on superweeds. In so doing, they are adding new costs and environmental concerns. For a decade, farmers have fought weeds that have developed resistance to glyphosate, the nation’s dominant weed killer, sold by Monsanto Co. as Roundup. They are finding success using large quantities of other herbicides, some of which are older and harsher. The use of 2,4-D in 2012 was four times the 2005 level and the use of dicamba more than doubled over the same period. The trend has been lucrative for companies that sell herbicides.
