I don't know if this is actually true that it's the first, but it is pretty impressive:
The worlds first municipal facility to convert household garbage into biofuels opened Wednesday at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. Its expected that by 2016, 90 per cent of the citys waste will be diverted out of the landfill due to this new facility. Currently, Edmonton recycles and composts 60 per cent of its waste.

(5,075 posts)"Food trimmings from the Potawatomi Bingo Casino kitchens are serving as fodder for an InSinkErator machine that grinds it up to be used in the tribes waste-to-energy plant.
The collaboration between the Menomonee Valley casino and Racine-based InSinkErator is a test for the manufacturers product. The system grinds food waste from the Menomonee Valley casino into a liquid, said David Brien, Potawatomi Bingo Casino director of facilities. The liquid is stored in a tank at the casino and then taken to the Potawatomis nearby digester plant, where it is converted into methane gas that is burned to produce power, he said.
The Potawatomis biodigester is next to its casino on Canal Street in the Menomonee Valley.
Weve got a lot of food venues here and weve got a lot of food waste, so they came knocking, Brien said.
The pilot project has been underway for 10 weeks, Brien said. It is diverting about 3.5 tons of food a week from the landfills, he said. The food all comes from the kitchens, and does not include left-overs from what is served at the restaurant tables, he said. The program is expected to reuse about 182 tons of waste a year, which is about the size of a 747 jumbo jet, Brien said.
Food from the Potawatomis hotel, which is under construction, also will be used to feed the digester plant, Brien said."

(6,436 posts)This is great. Huzzahs for Canada!
We could be doing this in the U.S. but of course, it's impractical, inefficient and anyway ethanol will destroy our brains and makes food prices EXPLODE
Ethanol, is commonly used as a blend for gasoline, he said. Its mandated in Alberta to have a five per cent ethanol blend, so it will more likely be sold to one of the refineries nearby and be used to power your vehicle.
recommended!
Oh BTW, be advised mentioning alcohol biofuels on this site in anyway that is not vituperative is hazardous to your health!
