Grand Coalition to expand network of GREEN hydrogen fueling stations in Germany

Renewableenergyfocus.com 08 October 2014

Automaker Daimler and industrial gases giant The Linde Group are teaming with oil & gas companies Total, OMV, Avia and Hoyer to significantly increase the number of hydrogen fueling stations in Germany. The initiative will implement 13 new refueling locations by the end of 2015, and secure sustainable sourcing of ‘green’ hydrogen...

Daimler and Linde are leading a German initiative to implement 13 new hydrogen refueling locations by the end of 2015.

...Linde already secures half of the hydrogen for existing CEP fueling stations from ‘green’ sources, and it will power the 20 new stations with fully renewable hydrogen.

The green hydrogen is obtained from crude glycerol – a by-product of biodiesel production – at a dedicated pilot plant at the Linde gases centre in Leuna. The certified green hydrogen obtained in this way produces far fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional methods.

Linde also has other sustainable sources at its disposal, like bio natural gas and water electrolysis using wind-generated electricity, for example as part of the H2BER project...

‘Hydrogen won’t let you down’ says Mercedes

...Reliability is a chief concern, with a lack of qualified mechanics in incipient markets and worryingly ambiguous repair costs. With the first models in a new generation of ‘mass production’ fuel cars vehicle now (or very soon to be) available, however, the companies building them want to reassure us.

Mercedes-Benz is one such company, investing heavily in the technology, and its familiar B-Class F-Cell prototype is now approaching 200,000 miles of continuous running in every day conditions.

Mercedes says this demonstrates reliability in harsh conditions over a timeframe of several years. Its fleet of prototypes has been in the hands of ‘customers’ since 2010, cumulatively covering more than five million miles.

“We have clearly demonstrated that the fuel cell electric drive is ready for the road,” says Prof. Herbert Kohler, Daimler’s chief environmental officer...
