Hyundai is about to start leasing its ix35 Fuel Cell car to UK customers

The hydrogen economy is alive, well and coming soon according to Sae Hoon Kim, Hyundai’s most senior research engineer into fuel cell technology.

Citing the latest Japanese Government Basic Energy Plan, which suggests that hydrogen is a key energy carrier for Japan in future years, he says Hyundai’s fuel cell-powered ix35 SUV will surmount previous barriers to fuel cell vehicles because it will be readily available and there will be a refuelling infrastructure in place.

“It was chicken and egg,” he told Telegraph Cars. “If you did hydrogen filling stations, you couldn’t guarantee the cars [and vice versa]. Now we are keeping the production line going, so if you order the car, you can get one within three months.”

He says the Japanese energy report is a bellwether for the direction of the fuel cell industry, not just for cars, but also household electricity supply.
