Two Greenpeace activists were injured on Sunday (November 16) after Spanish navy boats rammed into their boats when they were protesting against Repsol's plan to drill for oil off the coast of the Canary Islands, Greenpeace said.

The Greenpeace activists were protesting near the drilling ship Rowan Renaissance off the coast of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

A Greenpeace spokesman, who said the protest was peaceful, said the the navy's action was evidence the state was defending the interests of big companies at the expense of the will of the people of the island and the country at large.

"It was disproportionate, we didn't expect that from state forces, but I repeat, it shows how the government in supporting the interests of a multinational like Repsol and disregards the activist groups in the Canary Islands, environmentalists, the government of the Canaries and the Spanish society in general," Julio Barea said....
