Sioux Nation wants to focus on renewable energy, not dirty tar sands oil
Staff Report
FRISCO Just a few days after responding angrily to the U.S. House vote to approve the Keystone XL Pipeline, Sioux Nation Native American leaders met with the Obama administration to explore renewable energy options.
The meeting included representatives from more than eight federal agencies and offices, including representatives from the Departments of Agriculture, Interior, Treasury, and Tribal Relations.
Focusing attention on the Oceti Sakowin Wind Power Project can help show there is an alternative to more fossil fuel development. The project would be the biggest to be operated and owned by Native Americans.
As envisioned, the one-gigawatt wind farm could extend across eight reservations in South Dakota, adding infrastructure to the nations power grid, and also create green jobs for both Native Americans and non-natives.

(17,863 posts)1. I went to a presentation by one
of the leaders in our state, Iowa, regarding wind energy. He mentioned some of the best land in western Iowa is not being utilized because of the transmission cost/loss getting it to urban areas. Same situation may apply to South Dakota - perhaps Denver could use the power?
