Our lack of ability to understand and react appropriately to long term dangers will result in our extinction. We evolved to handle short term threats, like the lion approaching the village, but we fail to even notice, let alone deal with, long term deadly dangers.

Only a few among us are at all capable of accepting that such dangers even exist, but among those few, none are capable of doing what it takes to avoid those dangers. I'm willing to bet that very few, if any, of the hand-wringing environmentalists who complain about climate change are willing to completely give up their own activities that contribute to that climate change.

I don't see many people giving up the products of agribusiness to return to the life of a hunter-gatherer. Every banana you eat, every pineapple, every bit of produce on your table that did not come from walking distance of your home, is your contribution to climate change, and you will not give that up. You refuse to give that up, even if it means (as it does) the end of the human race, and the early death of your children and grandchildren.

We each carry that inborn genetic flaw within us, and it is that flaw that dooms us as a species. And, high-minded speech-making aside, there is nothing we can do to change that fundamental flaw in human nature. We have failed to adapt quickly enough to save our species, and more "blah blah blah", or "yada yada yada"; more glowing optimistic techno-blabbering will not change that fact.
