Charles W. "Wick" Moorman, the retired chairman, CEO and president of Norfolk Southern Corp., will lead Amtrak starting Sept. 1.
....

A native of Hattiesburg, Miss., Moorman joined Southern Railway, a predecessor of Norfolk Southern, as an 18-year-old co-op student at Georgia Tech. ... That was in 1970, a dozen years before the merger that created Norfolk Southern Corp.

He learned the business from the ground up, working in the track department for 12 years before earning an MBA at Harvard and starting a 15-year ascent to the top of the company.
....

Moorman's salary at Amtrak will be $1 a year, with an annual bonus of $500,000 tied to performance goals, according to The Wall Street Journal.
