Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte urges people to kill drug addicts

Friday 1 July 2016 03.16 BST

Authoritarian firebrand Rodrigo Duterte was sworn in as the Philippines’ president on Thursday, extending an olive branch to the country’s elites in his official speech, only to later vow to wipe out drug traffickers and urge the population to kill addicts.

Duterte, 71, won last month’s election in a landslide after a campaign dominated by threats to kill tens of thousands of criminals in a relentless war on crime, and tirades against the nation’s elite that cast him as an incendiary, anti-establishment hero.

Following a measured speech after taking his oath before a small audience inside the presidential palace, the outspoken leader paid an evening visit to a Manila slum and unleashed profanity-laden threats against drug traffickers in front of a crowd of about 500 people

“These sons of whores are destroying our children. I warn you, don’t go into that, even if you’re a policeman, because I will really kill you,” the head of state told the audience.

“If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful.”

After a vacation...Said drugs were a no no..Said she heard stories of tourists being caught with small amounts of drugs and being forced to surrender passports and enter a 30 day treatment program in Indonesia before they could leave.

Don't know if it's true but would make u think twice while visiting.

I also have a good friend who did 3 years in a Turkish prison back in early 70s for smuggling hash out.

No bueno.

They keep coming out.

Apparently driven by fear of execution, more than 900 drug pushers and users have surrendered to the police over the weekend as police and barangay (village) officials joined hands in carrying out a tough anti-drug program initiated by President Rodrigo Duterte.

Rizal Provincial Police Director Senior Supt. Adriano Enong Jr. said 762 drug “suspects” from various barangays in the province trooped to the headquarters of the Rizal Provincial Police in Taytay town where they underwent medical and psychiatric examinations and drug tests.

In Isabela province, at least 200 people involved in illegal drugs also surrendered to authorities in the towns of Ilagan and San Agustin. The youngest was 15 years old, police said.

MINDANAO, Philippines — Fearing execution under the new and tough president Rodrigo Duterte’s rule, at least a thousand drug pushers and users have surrendered themselves to police across Philippines over the past four days to sign a pledge to stop trading and using illegal drugs.

More than half of them were from Pasay, Quezon, Caloocan, Zamboanga, Rizal Province, Isabela Province and Caraga region. Topping the list was Zamboanga City (800), followed by Rizal Province (762), Pasay City (362), Quezon (200) and Caloocan (200).

Their mass surrender began after Duterte warned 15 mayors linked to drugs that they will be treated like ordinary criminals once he sits down as president. However, he did not name them.

During his presidential bid, Duterte had promised voters to put an end to criminality and drug menace within six months after he takes office.
