Captured documents reveal Russia's plan to annex Ukraine in ten days and kill its leaders

Russia planned to seize Ukraine within ten days and kill its leaders, according to new documents apparently signed off by Vladimir Putin.

The leaked plans, revealed by the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (Rusi), show that Russia aimed to have annexed the country by August.

Russia intended to capture Ukraine’s airfields, water supplies, central bank and parliament as Ukrainian officials either fled or were captured “as a result of the speed of the invasion".

The Kremlin created a "kill list" of Ukrainians that should be killed or suppressed.

10. Sanctions may hurt, but they will never stop delusional leaders whose wealth protects them.

Putin and his generals, and especially the guy who heads the Wagner group, are bullies and totally without any humanity. Force is the only way to stop them, and Ukraine simply does not have the firepower to stop them. NATO does and needs to use the prevention of atrocities and war crimes as a reason to supply Ukraine with air support and whatever they need to shove Russian forces back to their own country. If NATO allows this war to continue for another six months, thousands of Ukrainians are likely to freeze to death and their cities will be nothing but rubble. For what? Appeasement of a bully by allowing him to control the war.

It is what China would have to do in Taiwan in a quick invasion.

Kill the leaders in Taipei, take over communications, military, airports.

12. The US and other intelligence agencies were very sure of the Kremlin's plans;

they were warning Ukraine well before the invasion. If there was such a planning document it was probably in the IC's possession from early on.

I doubt that the Kremlin's intelligence services have been buttoned up any better since the invasion began. If anything the leaks and cooperation with the west have likely increased. It doesn't take a KGB agent to understand that things are not going to get better under Putin. Better to have some good creds with the outside in case ones life becomes untenable.

His generals told him about troop readiness. He didn't have anyone double checking the graft of the suppliers, the generals, and all the staff down to the sergeants. They all lived by graft from the people under them. Everybody had their hands in the till leaving troops not ready for an invasion, from not enough diesel, not enough food, proper clothing, ammunition. The common soldier seemed to live for looting to see what he could send home to Russia.

From the time Putin rose to power, he promoted military who were loyal to him instead of the best commanders. These loyal commanders took their share and then some from the military budget leaving not enough to really conduct an operation that lasted more than a few months. Vlad wants to reconstruct the old Russian empire before he dies. Apparently, nobody told Putin the cupboard was bare and he didn't check. Vlad doesn't look too good right now.

The troops he sent into Ukraine initially are reported to have no military kit except for a dress parade uniform.

Putin was putting a KGB plan into place, not a military one.

Kill all the Ukraine leaders, take over the military, communications, airstrips.
Install puppet leaders. All done in five days.

But you raise an interesting question. How much did Putin know about the corruption in his military.
Putin is very shrewd and most certainly knew his generals were living well above their pay grade.

but when you think of the similarities -- overestimating the capabilities of your troops, while vastly underestimating the resolve of the opposition -- the question deserves being asked.

and the small country is full of people who object strongly to the whole exercise.

The US certainly has extensive experience in that regard but there's no sign our military has learned the lesson yet.
