Copenhagen's historic stock exchange in flames

Denmark's historic old stock exchange building in the centre of Copenhagen has been engulfed by fire.

The 17th Century Børsen is one of the city's oldest buildings and onlookers gasped as its iconic spire collapsed in the flames.

Everyone inside the building was able to leave and people rushed to rescue some of its historic paintings.

Culture minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt said 400 years of Danish cultural heritage had gone up in flames.

I was wondering about the scaffolding providing access for nefarious activities. All the art must've been well guarded. NBachers Apr 16 #6

I have been inside that building many times for meetings in earlier years, and I used to love the feel of the history surrounding me. A real piece of their historical architecture has been lost. If this was arson, the perp should be drowned in the harbor.

If the fire was the result of an electrical failure or some low life tossing a lit cigarette somewhere where it would do some real damage, there were probably less safeguards in place against that since no one counted on either. The interior of the structure was mostly grand centuries-old wood.

Especially in a town center. So much character going up in flames.
