A Lebanese Hezbollah operative arrested in Cyprus this week on terrorism charges may have been part of wide-ranging Hezbollah effort to carry out attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets, Israeli TV reported Friday night.

The 26-year-old Lebanese man was arrested on Wednesday by security authorities in Cyprus on suspicion of planning to carry out a terrorist attack against Israeli tourists vacationing on the island.

The man, who is also a Canadian national, was found to be in possession of two tons of fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate — a chemical that can be used as an explosive. He was apprehended at his home in Larnaca, in southeast Cyprus.

Israel’s Channel 2 news said the quantity of explosives and other materials found in his possession indicated that the weaponry may have been intended for use by established Hezbollah cells in an ongoing effort to harm Israeli and Jewish targets. Some of the material may also have been intended for transfer to Gaza, the TV report said.
