Obama and Netanyahu to meet at White House to discuss Iran nuclear deal

Associated Press in Washington
Wednesday 16 September 2015 21.03 BST

President Barack Obama and the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, after months of chilly relations, will meet at the White House on 9 November to talk about the Iran nuclear deal that Israel’s government has harshly criticized and tried without success to block.

The White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, said the leaders would also discuss efforts to counter the Islamic State group’s activities in the Middle East. He called the meeting a demonstration “of the deep and enduring bonds between the United States and Israel as well as our unprecedented cooperation to further enhance Israel’s security”.

It will be the first formal meeting between Obama and Netanyahu in months.

Obama pointedly refused to see Netanyahu in March when the Israeli leader appeared before a joint meeting of Congress and harshly criticized the US-negotiated nuclear deal with Iran, Israel’s enemy. US lawmakers had arranged Netanyahu’s appearance without White House input.

Netanyahu should meet with his allies, the republicans. They can have their tantrum together over the Iran deal.

The sad thing is that to placate AIPAC and the Israeli right, Obama will probably give Netanyahu all kinds of military and financial goodies.

Obama has won, It will not be BooBoo calling the shots. If anything it may appear that BooBoo is being reigned in.

on behalf of Republicans, by helping push the message that Democrats appease terrorists and siphoning off Jewish votes and money to the Republicans.

Likud and the Republican party operate as two affiliates of the same transnational entity.

Bernie and Hillary are both as supportive of Israel as any Republican candidate.

There will be no "siphoning off Jewish votes and money to the Republicans"

His goal was to derail the Iran deal. He is against making any deals with Iran. He thinks Iran is out to destroy Israel and he wants to do everything he can to make sure that doesn't happen. He would love to convince the US to be more aggressive on that front. He doesn't care about Democrats vs Republicans.

Yes, pure, principled Bibi only wants to protect the people of Israel and encourage the US to be more vigilant in confronting evildoers.

Which is why he's known as the Republican Senator from Israel, why he tried to help Romney win in 2012, and why he surrounds himself with ex-American Republican hacks like Ron Dermer.

He believes that Iran is an existential threat to Israel and will do whatever it takes to make sure that threat does not materialize (including things that are definitely not particularly principled and could lead to the loss of life). I'm sure he'd prefer the US had a more like-minded president, just like I'm sure Obama would prefer Israel had a PM who was more in sync with his world view. But that's about the extent of that.

will go along with anything and everything Netanyahu will do or say. Any Republican--whether it's Rubio, or Cruz, or Carson--will refuse to put any pressure on Israel to slow settlement construction, negotiate with the Palestinians, etc. Heck, the Republicans (who are all Cheneyite warmongers) want to bomb Iran tomorrow, just like Bibi has been itching to do for years.

So, he thinks anything he can do to help Republicans win power inside the US is in his/Israel's interests.
