Gaza's Hamas rulers on Tuesday launched a month-long campaign urging alleged Palestinian "collaborators" with Israel to turn themselves in return for leniency.
"We announce the opening of the door to repentance for remaining collaborators and for all those who have fallen into the traps set by the enemy's intelligence services," interior ministry spokesman Islam Shahwan told reporters.
"We urge them to return to the bosom of their people and their families," he said, noting that the offer of clemency was open until April 11.
Under Palestinian law, collaboration with Israel is punishable by death.

While the Israeli spy agencies frequently coerce or deceive people into collaboration, the terms being offered or demanded (economic enticements, threatening families, etc) can be countered by the authority if a proper effort is made by both parties to do so. Somehow I doubt that'll get too far, but it's a nice idea.

(2,927 posts)... I can't think of any other place on DU where I would see such an elegant defence of the Death Penalty for a non-capital offence. I thought, as progressives, we were supposed to be AGAINST Capital Punishment -- particularly when those sentences are handed down by kangaroo courts.
I am in AWE.

(3,093 posts)obvious biases aside, I cannot imagine how it precludes treason and collaboration with the enemy in times of war, leading to the death or injury of citizens!

(6,068 posts)Collaboration with the enemy is generally considered treason, which remains a capital offence in the United States.
Most militias kill collaborators. Certainly that was the case on all sides during the Lebanese Civil War.
I don't know if the Jewish underground executed any pro-British collaborators during the 1940s, but I would be surprised if they did not.

(26,060 posts)Do you have any evidence of that? Or is just doing it for the money too hard a concept for you to grasp? Anyone who trusts hamas to keep their word is a fool.
