Gazans Alarmed by Draft Law Including Islamic Punishments

The penal code drafted by Hamas hard-liners in the Gaza Legislative Council has caused widespread debate not only inside Palestinian society, but also among the political and parliamentary leadership of Hamas, because it included forms of punishment such as flogging and hand amputation, in addition to criminalizing acts not mentioned in the current law.

The presidency of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza has released the draft penal code to civil-society organizations, Palestinian factions and Islamic scholars for discussion prior to its ratification by council members, who all belong to the Hamas movement in Gaza.

Hamas representative to the Legislative Council Yahya Moussa rejected the recently distributed draft law and affirmed that the Legislative Council had twice rejected the proposed formula due to its inclusion of Islamic forms of punishment.

People that the crazies regard as "the crazies" submitted a proposal identical to the two it previously put forth, that all got shot down.

I bet the draftees could run as Republicans and carry South Carolina.

there was pretty much a 50/50 split in power between the two parties in each territory. A flurry of arrests by Israel beheaded Hamas in the west bank, while the civil war wound up with Fatah being kicked out of Gaza, so we're in the situation we have now.

At any rate, point is, the people who drafted this mess are basically being called lunatics by the actual leadership of hamas - in as diplomatic a way as can be expected of hamas, but that's how it's going.

...The sweeping arrests of Hamas members of parliament...
...the civil war that resulted in Fatah's removal from power in Gaza...
...The mention in the article you posted of the drafted law being shot down twice times prior...

The Palestinian government is Parliamentary so ratio of representatives is equal to the percentage of the votes, so 50% of the population favor this draft? Going to be tough to get a majority.

And according to the article, the leaders of Hamas aren't likely to accept this proposal, given they've taken it out behind the woodshed twice already.

When the leaders of your authoritarian religious party are saying "yeeeah, that's too religious and authoritarian" to your proposal, odds are it's not going to get a pass.
