Supreme Court upholds BBC's refusal on Israel report

The UK Supreme Court has rejected an appeal against the BBC's refusal to publish a report into its coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Five justices unanimously dismissed the appeal by solicitor Steven Sugar.

However, the BBC argued that it was exempt from the Act with regard to information it held for the purposes of "journalism, art or literature".

Mr Sugar, who died of cancer last year aged 61, had wanted to know whether the report supported his claim that the corporation was biased against Israel.

As advocates of information sharing and journalism, any reputable news organization would gladly share the inner workings of their organization. Then again, if an organization's internal report confirms that the bias exists it would be an embarrasment. Clearly the BBC is trying to save face and would rather do that than adhere to journalistic principles of openness and fairness.

Can't say that I am overly impressed with British journalism at a whole. But, how the BBC behaves vis-a-vis the Guardian is immaterial. The BBC can choose to do the right thing and release the report, but prefers not to. It is their right to do so. Equally, it is my right to call in question their journalistic integrity.
