Jordan condemns Israeli 'escalation' on Temple Mount

Amman furious after clashes broke out at the plaza following Housing Minister Uri Ariel's visit to the site.

AMMAN - Jordan on Monday condemned what it called Israeli "escalation" in the flashpoint Temple Mount in Jerusalem, after a far-right Israeli minister visited the Al-Aqsa compound, warning it could cause further violence at the site.

Housing Minister Uri Ariel, deputy leader of the hardline national-religious Bayit Yehudi party, briefly visited the compound in Jerusalem's Old City on Sunday.

On his Facebook page, Ariel wrote he had to cut the visit short after clashes broke out between stone-throwing Palestinian youths and Israeli police at the site.

"Jordan rejects Israeli escalation in Al-Aqsa as well as measures that allow radicals to violate Al-Aqsa under protection of police and occupation forces," Minister of Information Mohammad Momani said in a statement carried by state-run Petra news agency on Monday.

was he allowed to go up to the temple mount?

This is why I support the increasing of the % of votes needed to gain seats in Knesset. To break the power of parties like Bayit Yehudi, Shas, national religious, etc.

but in this case I take it as a combination of intentional incitement and sort of 'territorial pissing' if you will, a reminder to Palestinians of who's really in charge here

sorry if that's severe but really how else can this be taken?

I gather from the article that he's a controversial political figure, but that shouldn't dictate whether or not a person is allowed to visit their religion's holy sites.

he did it just to stir up controversy and create problems. And yes being a controversial person is EXACTLY why they should not be allowed to visit a shared religion holy site. It is not just holy to Jews but to Muslims as well. His going there was only going to create problems.
