Israel advances plans for 2,269 new West Bank settlement homes

JERUSALEM (AFP)

-- Israel has progressed with plans for more than 2,000 new homes in six Jewish settlements across the West Bank an official said Thursday, in a move likely to further endanger peace talks.

Guy Inbar, a spokesman for the defense ministry unit responsible for civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories, said a ministry committee had furthered existing plans for 2,269 homes at a meeting last month.

He confirmed claims by anti-settlements Israeli group Peace Now about decisions on two sets of projects, which the watchdog said the committee had examined on February 19.

In the first case, the committee approved for validation 1,015 units in Leshem, Beit El and Almog, meaning the only remaining formality for their final approval is the okay of Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon.

Stop spamming the threads because you don't like a Palestinian publication that was
vindicated by an Israeli judge.

You'll do anything, evidently to avoid the OP which accurately reports the expansion of settlements.

If you continue to spam Ma'an threads it will be another stain on you...have at it.

Tzipi Livni is still a part of this coalition government. She is constantly being undermined in her role as chief negotiator with the PA, and is seemingly powerless.

If she can convince Yair Lapid to leave as well, the government would collapse and trigger new elections. I think she could convince him to withdraw his party and run under a unified banner, opposing Likud. Likud Yisrael Beiteinu would likely splinter back into its separate parties, which would leave a power vacuum to be filled by a unified Hatnuah Yesh Atid. and then maybe we can actually have serious negotiations on the part of the Israeli government. That would put a lot of pressure on Abbas and the PA to put up or shut up.

When he is not busy with all of that, Ariel also makes a point of announcing that he will do what he can to have ministers Yair Lapid and Tzipi Livni removed from the coalition government and replaced with representatives of the ultra-Orthodox parties, with whom he has made sure to foster close relationships. And every so often, he also comes out publicly against President Shimon Peres. In an interview with Maariv, he accused Peres of destroying the institution of the presidency. He said that Peres sided with an extremist minority and that he undermined the prime minister, “when he says that it is not necessary to demand recognition of Israel as a Jewish state.”

if Lapid and Livini leave the government, it would cause the coalition to collapse. The Yisrael Beiteinu party and its leader Lieberman would not support bringing in ultra-orthodox parties to the coalition. One of the few positive things he has worked for is to break the power of the religious parties and the rabbinate.
