Hamas’ cruel folly leaves Gaza in crisis: Editorial

Published on Aug 24 2014
If Palestinians in Gaza didn’t have enough reason to regret having thrown their political support to Hamas in 2006, they do now. A senior Hamas figure has just confirmed for the first time that his organization kidnapped and killed three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank in June. That helped spark a war that has left Gaza in ruins, and its people yearning for a ceasefire.
In a brazen revelation that confirmed Israeli claims, exiled Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri told a conference of Muslim scholars in Istanbul this past week that Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, carried out the abductions. Calling it a “heroic operation,” he said Hamas took the teens hoping to swap them for Palestinian prisoners. But the teens were shot soon after. He also said Hamas was bent on igniting another popular uprising in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.

the blockade did not start until Hamas started launching missiles and rockets in to Israel in 2006/7. Prior to that (and after the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza) there was no blockade.

Hamas needs to be disarmed, an international force (probably from the Arab League) would go in to make sure of this, then the blockade can be lifted.
