A Gazan’s wishes for 2015

I scroll down my Facebook news feed. I try not to catch a glimpse of the 2015 wishes of my friends abroad. However, my attempt to avoid reading their wishes fails!

It saddens me to see that other people’s wishes for the New Year are so different from what so many Palestinians would even consider possible. Why? Why can’t we dream of things other than having a year without another bloody war with Israel, having 24/7-electricity, and having the freedom to travel abroad? Why can’t Gazans just have a normal life? Why can’t we enjoy a festive beginning to the New Year as all other people around the world do? My heart aches, what I and other Gazans call wishes are what the rest of the world calls rights!

To receive my two language-learning maps:

I know this may sound too humble a wish to all of you. ...........

To have 24/7 electricity ........

I think these two wishes are enough for 2015. I will keep hoping I get my maps sometime soon. Knowing very well that electricity will never come all day long here, I won’t waste my hope for it.

"where else in the world would getting such educational materials be impossible?"

Is that a serious question?

"Why can’t we enjoy a festive beginning to the New Year as all other people around the world do?"

Are people in Syria enjoying a festive beginning to the New Year? North Korea? Nigeria? Congo?

"To have 24/7 electricity"

An estimated 79 percent of the people in the Third World -- the 50 poorest nations -- have no access to electricity.

The total number of individuals without electric power is put at about 1.5 billion, or a quarter of the world's population, concentrated mostly in Africa and southern Asia.

economic and social grievances with things such as "well if they think they have it bad here, they should look at Blacks in Africa"

3. Trade places with her then, if you think she has it so good.

Did you read the comments following the article? Compare your day to day life with theirs and try again to tell me she has nothing to wish for - I have many, many maps, dictionaries, books, encyclopedias - I can order and get them in days ....... why is it impossible for someone who just wants the ability to learn to get these simple things? Who has the right to deny such an innocent request?

Her wishes don't even begin to express the horrible difficulties it must be to raise a family under occupation hoping to get things done before the power is cut off, let alone all of the other atrocities of being imprisoned.

You do remind me of all those who pooh-pooh native North American Indian struggles trying to raise families on their reserves and the grievances of black people who 'have it so good', never-mind that discrimination against them is still as terrifyingly dangerous in so many cases every single day.

I'm always amused at those who have it all, who deny the desperate struggles of the poorest of the poor. And I pity them, really. Can't imagine being so lacking in empathy and compassion ...... it must be a strange way to live - so empty and self-absorbed.

Non western Muslims don't even celebrate the Gregorian New Year, their year starts with the month of Muhurram.

In other forums and run with your own fabrications.

But I get that Scoptaloo gets extremely frustrated with this tact when applied to King -David cos Scootaloo is unable to get away with it.

LOL

How dare you ?

That's another fabrication of Scootaloo.

( I imagine if I said that about you and Jews I would rightly be banned from this group)

Also, you pretty constantly accuse me, among several others, of hating Jews, being an antisemite, supporting David Duke, loving Hamas, etc. Doesn't seem like this is getting you banned any time soon. So, cut your victim fantasy already, you are not being oppressed.

states on FB that her religion is Islam but we're supposed to believe she celebrates the New Year based on a calendar that uses The birth of Jesus as it's starting point.

Uh huh.

January 1st is a public holiday in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Palestine, Kuwait, and Egypt. All these nations call it "New Year's Day."

You're going to have to do better, Mosby.
