In light of the big vote yesterday in North Carolina -- where voters approved a constitutional ban on gay marriage and civil unions -- this tweet from PublicPolicyPolling (which has a liberal background) rings true.
It seems likely that there's a phenomenon where voters tell pollsters the politically correct thing, but then act differently in the voting booth.

2. In NC, it was held on the same day as the Republican Primary

now granted, the nominee has already been picked, but the date was set purposely to coincide with republicans heading out to the polls.
Big surprise with the results.

Supporters just don't bother to vote. Haters, however, do vote.

7. I agree with you. I think the sad fact is that most people don't bother to vote unless

the outcome affects them personally or they are very driven about an issue. Hate and fear are powerful emotions that are stirred up by the proponents of these kinds of issues.

That is why most polling agencies have higher percentages of Republicans accounted for in their likely voter polls than Republicans actually are as a percent of the population.

I think a majority of Americans support gay marriage, and if everyone who was eligible to vote showed up, the count would reflect that.

10. Yesterday morning I checked the weather in the triangle.

No rain predicted meaning the non-haters were more likely to get to the polls and vote.

If it had been raining the Amendment would have passed by an additional 2-3%.

4. I want to be more optimistic. Republicans put up the Amendment on the same day as their primary

knowing their deranged base would come out to vote their prejudices.

So as usual, Republicans were gaming the system.

However, at least 40% voted against it.

... once the bigots start running TV commercials claiming that gay marriage means teachers will be forced to demonstrate anal fisting to third graders in public schools, suddenly people start voting against it.

8. That's because there are no national votes on it

All the votes have been at the state-level. So North Carolina may be against it, but when you dump them in with the other 49 states, gay marriage still wins - hypothetically, of course, if there were a national vote on it and if everyone who said they supported it got off their asses and voted.
