Mich. RNC member says gays want free healthcare because they’re dying of AIDS

LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan member of the Republican National Committee said last week that gays want free healthcare because they are dying of AIDS.

Dave Agema made the comments against people living with HIV and the LGBT communities while speaking Dec. 5 at the Berrien County Republican Party Holiday Reception, according to Equality Michigan, a statewide LGBT advocacy group.

While speaking against marriage equality, Agema said that during his time with American Airlines he witnessed LGBT workers claiming a person living with AIDS as their partner simply so that person could get medical benefits.

“Folks, they (gay people) want free medical because they’re dying (when they’re) between 30 and 44 years old,” he said. “To me, it’s a moral issue. It’s a Biblical issue. Traditional marriage is where it should be and it’s in our platform. Those in our party who oppose traditional marriage are wrong,” said Agema.

Equality Michigan has called on Republican leadership to denounce Agema’s remarks and is seeking his removal as a committeemember of the Republican Party. The organization is also encouraging the healthcare community to correct Agema’s remarks, saying they perpetuate a harmful stigma about people living with HIV.

for people with HIV to sign up for the ACA. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it got me to thinking about the Creepy Uncle
Sam ads trying to scare healthy young people off the plan. If the Rethugs are successful with their ad campaign to keep healthy
people from signing up the cost of the ACA may be much much higher than expected and may explode health insurance
premiums. The ACA may become a big mess for Democrats.
