GOP candidates for Texas AG vow to continue defending same-sex marriage bans; Democrat mum on issue

From intervening to block gay divorces to drafting opinions and briefs opposing insurance benefits for same-sex partners, Republican Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has vigorously defended the state’s marriage bans.

On Sunday, the three Republican candidates to replace Abbott — who’s running for governor — all indicated they’d continue to do so, according to the Associated Press.

At a meeting of the Texas Association of Realtors in Austin, Railroad Commissioner Barry Smitherman, state Sen. Ken Paxton and state Rep. Dan Branch “blasted attempts to strike down the Texas law and vowed to defend a state ban going forward,” the AP reported.

“All of the requirements of marriage have always been state issues, and they should remain state issues,” Smitherman said.
