Nigerian Cardinal: It’s impossible for Catholic Church to support gay marriage

And there it is. Complicit in the horrid persecution of LGBTs in Nigeria. I really don't want to hear any more denials or excuses from any quarter.

It’s impossible for Catholic Church to support gay marriage –Onaiyekan
August 13, 2014
By DENISIA IJEOMA OKONKWO

John Cardinal Olorunfemi Onaiyekan is the Roman Catholic Cardinal Archbishop of Abuja. He was previously President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and Bishop of Ilorin.
Two years ago, he was elevated a cardinal, and just last year, he took part in the conclave that produced the present Pope Francis. And taking part in that assignment of electing a pope is what he describes as the most exciting experience of his life in the mission of being a cleric.

Recently in this interview, he recalled to Abuja Metro, the moving story of his life and work in the Lord’s vineyard, and affirmed that it is just impossible for the Catholic Church to change its position and support gay marriage...

...Do you foresee the Catholic Church sustaining its stance on gay marriage in the future?
Unfortunately, we are living in a world where these things have now become quite acceptable but for the fact that they are acceptable doesn’t mean that they are right. The Catholic Church considers itself as carrying the banner of the truth in the world that has allowed itself to be so badly deceived.
On gay marriage or homo sexuality in general, everybody knows that the Catholic Church is about the only group that among the Christian groups that has stood very firmly against it and we insist that it is against God’s will. Therefore, it is not a question of something for us to discuss and decide whether we shall accept it or not. Even if people don’t like us for it, our church has always said homosexuality is unnatural and marriage is between a man and a woman. There is no such thing as marriage between two men or marriage between two women. Whatever they do among themselves should not be called marriage. There is no question of the Catholic Church changing its positions on this matter.

How is the Catholic Church dealing with the issue of child molestation?
Catholic Church has always handled the matter because it is not a new thing. But please let us know that it not just a matter that concerns only the Catholics. We have now realized that it is happening everywhere. And in fact, it has been proven that the number of child molestation takes place within the family by close family members, even parents molesting their own children but it doesn’t come out much because how will a child go and report his father or mother? So, we should just realize that these things are happening. The only thing we can say now is that with the rigorous campaign of homosexuals and other aspects of modern culture which practically deifies sexual pleasure that you can achieve sexual pleasure with whatever way you like, that is leading to a terrible situation of immorality which the modern world is only hypocritical when they are claiming that they don’t like it. The Catholic Church has designed very very strict and effective norms especially in the last 10 years to deal with situations where members of the church are involved in this kind of a thing. We have our regulations and rules of what to follow and our rules and regulations are so much more stringent than any other group that we know around.... MORE at link above.

But in case you still think the Cardinal wasn't being clear about supporting the persecution of LGBTs...

Nigerian Catholic Cardinal Praises Anti-LGBT Law
Filed By John M. Becker
January 22, 2014

Nigeria's draconian new "Jail the Gays" law, which imposes stiff prison sentences for everything from same-sex marriage to LGBT rights advocacy and public displays of same-sex affection, has drawn condemnation from governments and human rights leaders across the globe. But the law is being robustly defended by the country's religious community, including senior officials in Nigeria's Roman Catholic Church.

Roman Catholic Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop of the capital city of Abuja, praised the Nigerian government for passing the law and told reporters that leaders should resist international pressure to end Nigeria's persecution of its LGBT community. From PM News:

"The church accepts people as they are, we condemn homosexuality, Nigeria is an independent country and we do not beg for food. We have every right to order our social life in any way we think it should go. Our social life should not be organised on the basis of what others think.

"On this note, I commend our National Assembly and Mr President for resisting all the pressures and enacting a law against homosexuality," [Cardinal Onaiyekan] said.

He stressed that the law prohibiting same sex marriage was a good omen for the country. "Signing the bill into law by President Jonathan in spite of pressures from within and outside the country should be commended by all and sundry."
