The Gay Marriage Parade

Only On GoJo - With major developments in the last month in Washington, California, New Jersey and Maryland, it is clear advocates of what is now called, “marriage equality” are making progress. There is a sense that those clinging to the conventional view of marriage as being between a man and a woman are on the losing side of history.

Defeats are seen as nothing more than setbacks in a world that is becoming more relaxed about the social standards of the Oldsmobile generation. A lot of it has to do with the more liberal worldview of younger Americans who just don’t see things through the prisms of race, gender, or any other social silo.

As governors fall into line behind younger voters, a new language has developed to explain how politicians who once saw marriage according to religious definitions, are now able to see it as nothing more than a commitment between two people.

The words to watch for are “evolve” and “personal journey.” Governor Chris Gregoire(D) and Governor Martin O’Malley(D) have both cited personal evolution and growth for their changing positions over the years. It should be noted both completed their evolutions less than a year after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo(D) successfully won approval for a gay marriage law, to nationwide acclaim.
