You know what I figured out..it is a Speilberg homage to all those Sat. matinee movies we went to as kids in the 50's.
there were basically only 2 kinds of kids movies back them at the theaters in the afternoon: westerns and outerspace stuff.
He just combined them.
the people who did "get" that, who took the movie seriously, panned it, big time.

My inner 10 year old self enjoyed it.
