Had my first consult with the weight loss surgeon today. Everything went

pretty good. He ask me what surgery I was thinking about, the sleeve, then after my physical he recommended a different one, the Roux-en Y. He said it was still my call but because of my medical issues he thinks the latter would work better. SO, back to do more research.

Also met with the dietician, so I am started in the program, just have to decide now.

I have heard that the gastric sleeve alone has a high failure rate. My surgeon recommended the duodenal switch with the gastric sleeve as well. Since I am diabetic, I want to be sure that I am not able to over-ride the procedure and have a failure. Be sure to do lots of research before you have it done. My Doctor, Dr Antone at Methodist in Omaha, gives a two hour informational seminar before he accepts anyone. He answered many questions and he has had years of experience, so I am quite comfortable with his skill.
Have you been to a seminar yet?

Congrats on starting your WLS journey. Dr Antone gets rave reviews. I've had the duodenal switch. I have many friends who've had the sleeve and they are thrilled with the results.

They've lost and maintained.

Feel free to jump right in and too, check the post below for some links that might be helpful to you too.

Good luck on your journey

I don't pretend to be an expert but the sleeve OR a full bileopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch would be MUCH better.
The sleeve would ONLY reduce the stomach and NOT interfere with nutritional absorption therefore you would have no issues with having to take mega doses of supplements. You wouldn't run the risk of malnutrition either.

The RNY removes the pyloric valve and therefore removes all of the gastric juices for proper digestion and most (not all) people have problems with dumping syndrome something I have NO issues with having had the BPD/DS

consider joining this group and bombarding them / us with all the questions you can think of. This group helped me in so many ways. They truly are the experts.

I'm planning a bypass in November. I'm supposed to be making an appointment with the psychologist today, but am somehow having trouble working up to it--every step makes it more real and more scary.

Maybe because that's what she does best. This practice (Magee, Pittsburgh) doesn't do gastric sleeve at all, and has an extremely low complication rate for RNY.

Do your research, and talk to people who've had each of the surgeries before you make a decision. And good luck!
