What about adoptions records? I tried about 5 years ago to find out info on my Dad (b. 1921, d. 2007) as I understood he was adopted and PA has (had?) the most restrictive laws in the US re: adoption records.

3. I tried out the indeces today -

Not too bad. I had to bone up on my Soundex skills; haven't used that for a while.

You have to find your individual on the index and then use the file number from the index for the application for the non-certified copy of the death cert.

Even without the certs; just spending 30 minutes poking around the indeces I got a couple of death dates that I hadn't known before (just had the year from the headstone.)

This weekend I hope to fill out a half-dozen or so requests, which at $3 a pop isn't terrible, but it is more than I would normally outlay for my little hobby.

If you can hold out to the summer, they should all be available for free. I have about 115 that I am waiting for.
