Why I need to find my crockpot...

Found a chicken on sale for 90 cents a pound. Usually I get rotisserie chickens for that price, and after stripping the meat off for chicken sandwiches and, soups, I toss the skin an bones into a stockpot.

So I threw the raw chicken into the pot and went into the living room to read.

When the smoke alarm woke me up, there was burned mess in the bottom of the pot and the chicken was overcooked.

Overcooked chicken will stil go into soup, but is there any way of salvaging the mess on the bottom of the pot?

Toss it out. Charred taste will infect everything you cook with it.
If it is just cooked but not charred add some broth or wine or fat to the pot and gently warm till you can scape it out.

boiling a couple inches of water with baking soda in the pot and scraping the burned stuff off as it comes loose.

I use my cellphone timer, or whatever.

Who hasn’t been in this situation before?? It’s the best way to handle this, imho.

Any time I am cooking or making bread and get to a step where I can walk away, I set a timer and carry it with me. The only times this has failed me was when I was so tired I put something into the oven and forget to start the timer. Fortunately, most of the time, I smell it before it gets too far gone.

I use my instant pot to cook a whole chicken. One method is poaching, and then I get yummy stock right away. The other method; I put a spice rub all over the chicken, one cup of water in the bottom. https://kristineskitchenblog.com/how-to-cook-a-whole-chicken-in-an-instant-pot/

The poached chicken is not all that "pretty" but very tasty. Recipe says to put under broiler for a while, but why bother.

Instant Pot, and it does work great, but I really like the way slow cooking infuses flavors.

dissolve it.

I use enough to cover the burned stuff and add just enough water to make a thick paste and let it sit for a coupol of hours then scrub it.

That stuff will really help loosen that junk.

You can also use it to get tea stains out of a plastic pitcher. I have one of those translucent Tupperware pitchers and I just dissolve Oxy Clean in the water and let it sit then scrub it out. Looks brand new!
