Commercial-break soup

Start with sweating some onions in olive oil in a large pot. Add celery, carrots, cabbage, or green pepper to the sweat if you feel so inclined. Add some stock--any kind--and put on a low simmer. Then, every commercial break, add something to the soup. In today's batch I've so far added a can of tomatoes, a can of white beans, a handful of barley, a handful of lentils, leftover pot roast, and some peeled and diced broccoli stems. Next I'll see what's in the freezer.

I make soup like this on winter days like today when we're hanging out watching TV. It's a modern version of stone soup, I suppose.

Seems like the ingredients are right under your nose, and goodness knows, there are plenty of commercials unless you're on a premium cable channel!
