On a whim today, we went out to the local garden center to ask when they'd start having the trees in we were looking for, and found something even more impressive than what we'd been intending to get. It had a tag on it saying 'hold until close' with tomorrow's date on it, but they didn't think the person wanted it after all, so they called and found out that no, indeed, they were free to sell it, so we bought it.

I present the Felix Jury Magnolia. (Person is not either of us, I just took the photo from the web. Person is to show the scale of the flowers. That's right, foot across flowers!)

Apparently they're cultivated in New Zealand, and I have no idea how it wound up in Ohio. The word 'fluke' was used by the employee who told us they wouldn't be getting any more in. So Monday they're supposed to call to arrange a time to deliver and plant it. I've spent the last few hours out in the front yard with axe and shovel, trying to get a big enough hole chopped through the tree roots from the 60 ft maple we used to have out there. I'm thinking I've got the hole maybe half as wide as it needs to be so far, so lots more digging and chopping tomorrow.

I'd consider us a bit fringe, but with climate change our last few winters have been pretty mild. If it does survive, it's going to add major curb appeal to the house, especially in early spring - it's already in bloom now.
