Going to Christmas Eve dinner at my BFF's, the one with the Harry Potter house. I don't what she's making, but I'm taking:
--a favorite salad of mine, brown rice mixed with asparagus, grapes, Mandarin orange slices, thinly sliced celery on the mandolin, scallions, thyme, orange zest, raisins, and toasted pecans. The dressing has orange juice, thyme, Dijon, olive oil, a little brown sugar, and sherry vinegar.
--cucumber-mango kabobs (kind of appetizer thing)
--baked apples with raspberry sauce. Toasted walnuts to top.
--and a couple bottles of wine, of course
Presents are all ready and packed in the car, whew.

(10,162 posts)I've done 7 to 9 course dinners for Christmas eve in the past (traditionally this is a day of fast and abstinence in the Catholic Church. However "abstinence" means "no meat" (fish is ok), and "fast" means "no more than one big meal" so this is in many Catholic countries an occasion for a pesco-vegetarian feast before midnight mass). This year will be a lot simpler: scallops, Caesar-ish salad (with whatever lettuce I have), rice, some sort of vegetable, poached pears for dessert.

(35,749 posts)Your post brought back memories of where I lived 20 years ago, which was next door to a lawyer and his daughter in a townhouse complex. He would always invite me for his seafood feasts on Christmas Eve. What a seafood extravaganza it was, too, with giant prawns, lobster, seafood stew. Various interesting people were invited, so it was a fun evening.
This guy wasn't a typical lawyer, btw. I felt the need to mention that, LOL.
I remember one year I mentioned in conversation an essay written by Susan Orleans that I was using in a magazine journalism class. The essay took place in a particular Northern NJ community. To my amazement, many of the people there that night were from that town. They knew the essay, the people mentioned in it, and in particular the little kid who was profiled. They told me addresses where I could see the kid's former house, the school, etc. I took pics and showed them to my students. It really brought that essay home for them.

was our likely dinner, but FLFC and I got hungry. His suggestion was cheeseburger. That's always his suggestion.
Swiss cheeseburger and a slice of hothouse tomato on an onion roll with a side of deli mustard potato salad.

(1,707 posts)but I only make potato and cheese ones. We also had borscht, deviled eggs, shrimp with cocktail sauce, and crackers with three spreads: olive tapenade, pimento cheese, and a whipped feta one with some finely diced cucumber and radish. Sparkling cider and poinsettia cocktails to drink, and dessert was chocolate mini cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and Christmas sprinkles.

(35,749 posts)Forgot all about them! Maybe will make some Christmas Day.
That sounds like a scrumptious Christmas Eve meal. I have to go look up poinsettia cocktails, though. New to me.

They even sent us home w/ a bunch of food.
We thought it most kind of them. They didn't know it, but due to a vehicle that needs expensive repairs, we really couldn't go anywhere.

(68,696 posts)pulled pork cooked slowly in oven with a great rub, homemade barbecue sauce, rolls. Also made Chicken Divan and jasmine rice. We had croissant rolls and a vegie platter as well. For dessert Sweet Potato pie, butterscotch pie and homemade cupcakes...all Gluten free. My Sister sent gourmet chocolates...yum. We had all sorts of hor d'oeurvres : assorted types Salami and fresh Mozzarelli, olives, Chips and dips...also a fruit platter. It was fun. We opened our presents last night as the kids are going to in-laws today. Christmas eve was always our thing anyway...too exhausted on Christmas day!
