Related: About this forumDo you think I have too many spices? This is a 55 quart tote
that weighs about 40 pounds. I'm packing my kitchen up for a move. How well do you think these will survive being put in a PODS?

(2,230 posts)as too many spices, IMHO.
Too few is a big problem, however.

(102,371 posts)Only the most frequently used spices turned over with any frequency.
I can tell fresh from dried herbs, but dried spices? If they were kept air-tight and away from the light, I don't see the problem even when "old"...

(7,637 posts)Each time I look up a recipe to buy ingredients at the store, I never know what spices we have at home so I end up buying those needed for the recipe..🤔
We must have like 5 bottles of paprika...

(15,952 posts)I have been on the look out for spice racks to store my beads in. I currently have a McCormick wooden rack with jars for my beads. Looking to find more.
If you still have it I'd buy it from you within reason.

(1,109 posts)There are never too many spices.
The ones in plastic shakers will last longest. They may lose a little oomph if it is hot or humid and could clump up. The ones in cardboard or other packets should be tasted before use. They can taste wonky if stale .
Good luck on your move grats on your extensive spice collection.

(13,196 posts)but both will suffer in a hot dry environment.
I don't know where yo are, but if its cool to cold you should be fine.
On the other hand if it's sunny and warm the interior of a metal box will get hot enough to age your flavor stash prematurely.
Limit air flow, keep the spices and herbs as cool as possible and hope for the best - Replacing that many items would suck.
On the other hand, Penzey's has a replacement set for about $160 that is a good wedding gift as well -

(15,805 posts)During a big renovation project I stored my spice collection similar to you, although I used smaller containers. Everything went into my garage and was subject to outside temperatures.
About 8 months later I started unpacking and discovered most of my spices were odorless and tasteless. Some had deteriorated to the consistency of dust. I had to toss everything. I'm still discovering some missing spice that I need to buy.
If I had known they wouldn't last maybe I could have asked some of my family to store them in a closet where the temps were in the normal household range. I would have been better off giving them away where at least they could be used and not go to waste.
