(23,337 posts)Only because Ive had to do that dishwasher clean out chore before...Run an empty load once a week with the hottest water you can with a glass (Pyrex) cup of white vinegar in the dishwasher. It is a miracle degreaser and cleaner. Its a good habit to get into and suggested to me by the dishwasher repair guy. I do it with my clothes washer as well. Sorry you had that shitty chore to do...

I'll try to start getting the family to implement.
Unfortunately, our family tends to do very little scraping of the dishes or soaking the dishes before putting them in the machine. What has repeatedly happened is I have to open the air gap on the sink and clean it out to unclog the washer. Usually, a jab with a long thin rod through the air gap is enough to clean it out.
Yesterday, however, I tried and tried, and it didn't work. I was going to give up and call the appliance repair folks, but I had a small handheld air compressor that I was able to aim at the air gap opening. That, plus several prods of the thin rod, finally cleared up the gunk. The washer drained itself and was able to go through the cycle ok.
I keep telling my family to at least soak the dishes in a tub of water to loosen up the gunk before putting it in the dishwasher, but no one listens!

(9,273 posts)My granddog finishes the kids cereal (licked clean!) and the bowls go right into the dishwasher. This is why I run the dishes every day.
