Update on my boy: He had a shovel handle fall on him and he couldn't stand up. Given that he is a dachshund, you have to really be careful. I kenneled him for hours and then put ice on his spine. So when I got him out he was walking. I can't tell you the relief. The only place I could find comfort was here. Thank you all so much. I wish I could tell you what a comfort it was to come here and talk. Hugs to all of you from me and my little old man.

i love them to death, of course, but it seems like the specter of that short life span just hangs in the air over them sometimes. it is such a nagging feeling.
