Related: About this forumSammy the wondercat has gone to the Rainbow Bridge
My loving, loyal Sammy left us last night. She was 20 and was loved by all. She was diagnosed with two tumors last month and she started to have breathing problems on Saturday. Late last night, she started to go into respiratory arrest and died in the kitchen before we had a chance to get her to the emergency vet.
We adopted Sammy while we were stationed in Guam in the early 90's and brought her back to Virginia, along with four other cats. She was our last link to Guam and I will miss her very much. The house just isn't the same without her, even though she had slowed down in the last year or so, she still serenaded us with her Siamese yowl (she was part Siamese) and still loved to play. I didn't sleep well last night and neither did Mr. Virgdem. I had hoped she would make it to 21, but it was not to be. We will be taking her to the Pet Cremation services later on this morning and will start the sad process of picking up the cremains and picking out an urn. I still have my 4 year old, Abby and will spoil her rotten as an only child should be. The only consolation is that Sammy is not suffering any more and is at peace. We will meet once again at the Rainbow Bridge, all of my kitty kids. Love you Sammy!!

(67,798 posts)I like to try for happy thoughts at time like these. I hear there's a wonderful patch of catnip that grows on the bank of the stream over there at the edge of The Meadow.

(17,276 posts)She is indeed at peace now. Why not adopt another friend for Abby, eventually? Kitten season will be coming up very soon at a shelter near you.

(2,126 posts)I do intend to eventually adopt a little orange boy kitty to keep Abby company. We just need a little time to grieve and go through that process before adopting again. We will know when it is time and then another kitty will grace our presence once again.

(11,065 posts)Sammy had a wonderful very long life with you. She is at peace now, but damn is it ever hard for those that are left behind.

(2,126 posts)What consoles me is that we extended her life by giving Sub-q fluids for almost 6 years (she had a bout of Pancreatitis at 15). Those years were good years, except for the last 2 months. She was even playing with a toy on the day she died. It was her time and I don't think there was anything we could have done for her. She is at peace and that brings a sense of comfort to me. You are right, though, about those that are left behind to grieve. I'm walking around in a fog today and really can't work at all. I hope tomorrow is a little better for me and as time goes on, I know I will feel better.

(18,219 posts)My wondercat is named Sammy too---and he means a lot to me, even though I only got him last July. I can only wish to have that many years to love on him. You did well to have a cat for so long. It must be hard right now. I know how bad it is.

(2,126 posts)for over 20 years. I think that everyone who has dogs/cats has one special buddy that means more to them than all the others. Sammy was that cat. She was Daddy's girl, but I loved her just as much. My husband didn't cry for the others, but this morning, he cried for Sammy. She had a way about her that touched our hearts. When you petted her, she touched you right back with her paw-she interacted with us the way none of the others did. She wasn't much of a lap cat, but loved to sit right beside us while purring all the while. She was the only one of our 7 cats that played fetch with her mousie and brought it back to you. A very special girl that we will miss as long as we live.

(14,524 posts).. that has become so much a part of your life. The hardest part of the contract we make with our furry friends is the knowledge that they will be going to The Bridge ahead of us, but having them waiting for us there is our solace for our sense of loss. Our thoughts are with you.
