Rosa's story

This has a happy ending.

Some of you may remember about a month ago I took in four foster kittens, about five weeks old. They all had upper respiratory infections and were on antibiotics. A few weeks ago, Rosa, one of the black kittens became very ill. She was struggling to breathe and it wasn't just her nose. Her little sides were heaving in and out. Saturday morning two weeks ago I took her in to the shelter as soon as they were open.

Megan, the shelter operations manager was there and took little Rosa under her wing. She put her in a room with steam, gave her sub q fluids and Pedialyte and added a second antibiotic. At night she took her home and cared for her. Poor Rosa wasn't eating at all and it was touch and go for a few days. A trip to the vet and an x-ray showed fluid in the lungs.

Finally on Tuesday night I got the welcome text saying she had started to eat a little on her own! By the next weekend she was much better, and since I had taken the rest of the kittens in while I was away on a long weekend, Rosa was allowed to come and play with her sibs at the shelter during the day, then go home with Megan to rest and have more steam at night.

On Monday I picked them up again and Rosa was with them and ready to go home, too. We've still got the whole group on two antibiotics, and Rosa will go in next Wednesday for a third and hopefully final x-ray check up. The kittens are two months old now and full of energy and fun. As soon as everything is clear they will be going in for their surgery and up for adoption.

It's so good to see this come out well. It could easily have gone the other way. Much credit goes to Megan, the Elmbrook Humane Society, and their no-kill, every little life matters policy, which is that they treat every animal as if it were their own pet and make decisions accordingly.
