First time I've fostered kittens in the dead of winter--these must have been born around the beginning of October.
I've had this 5-pack of kittens for the last two weeks. They are about four months old and all different, but are from are all from the same litter. The two long haired kittens had so many mats that one had to have her back shaved. The other, a black long haired cat had a lot of mats around his neck which I snipped out. So he has gaps in his "mane" but both will be grown out in a few months. These two are very friendly and like to be on my lap, which is good because they need to be combed daily to prevent more tangles and mats! The other three are more shy, but have warmed up after two weeks. They still don't willingly come onto my lap, but they do like me to pet and brush them. So here's the line up:
Cami, brown tabby
Katy, the long haired grey who had to have her back and neck shaved
Jack, the long haired black. Very friendly and playful and very big--will be a big boy!
Christopher the grey tabby with white, and Vincent, solid grey and very sweet
All of them on the stairs. They are living in an upstairs bedroom and come downstairs for play and adventures.
Fostering is a lot of fun! I'd recommend it--there is always a need for foster homes for cats and dogs, kittens and puppies!

(7,473 posts)So happy you can take them. I am sad that there are so many beautiful animals that face certain death if we do not step in to help.
I have a shelter kitty, have had others through the years. I cannot take any more, the adoption fee in my area is $225.00 and my current friend requires expensive medical attention.
I have no money to adopt another cat but would love one for my current furry friend. I hope everyone who sees this post will go to their shelter and find their forever friend. They give far more than they will ever cost.
If we don't help, these wonderful pets will die.

(17,276 posts)The only thing I have to pay for is food and litter, after the initial supply they give me is used up. All medical bills taken care of by the shelter. If you could foster kittens or a cat, you'd have companionship for your one. I know not everyone is able to do this, but just a thought.
I think it's really too bad that some shelters have to charge so much for a pet. Cats at our shelter are $25 for an adult and $100 for kittens. Discounts if you take more than one. To raise money we hold fundraisers instead.

(17,600 posts)Wish I could adopt them all.
Alas, the Queen would probably not tolerate it. And between her and the other one it's about all my allergies can stand.
But those are some gorgeous babies.

(9,823 posts)or an animal shelter? All of the kittens look highly adoptable. I do a lot of transports to rescue groups and there aren't many kittens this time of year. What about their mama? Did she get rescued/adopted/spayed? I'm curious as to how things are done in other areas.

(17,276 posts)We have maybe up to 36-40 cats available at any one time, and maybe around 15-20 dogs, plus some small animals--rabbits, birds. More in foster care and in medical treatment.
You're right, it isn't kitten season and these guys are older. Just with me for a little more socialization. They were turned in as strays so I don't know what happened to the mother.
Elmbrook Humane Society has been around since the 60s and is a non-profit and the only truly no-kill shelter in Wisconsin. We hold several fund raisers throughout the year and also things like running a lure course (for dogs) every weekend from spring to fall. We do get animal transports from Rescue Waggin', otherwise we take the overflow from the main county shelter and also the animal control in Milwaukee. In our suburban area there are some strays, but more of course in Milwaukee. Rescue Waggin' regularly brings mainly dogs up from Southern states.
I've been a volunteer for 4 1/2 years and I am among maybe 200 volunteers who help make the shelter a success. It's a small enough place so that everyone knows you and appreciates your helping out.

(17,276 posts)They have all had their surgeries and are up for adoption. Oh and the vet has corrected their ages: says they are six months, not three as was listed. I knew they were older!
See them on this page: http://www.ebhs.org/index.php/adopt-2/cats

(17,276 posts)Day one, Katy got adopted. Day two, Cami found her new home. That is so rewarding to me, because I helped make them more social.
Now for the three boys!
