broke a tooth off at the gum line. The vet can't perform surgery until Monday, so I have to keep doping him up with liquid gabapentin for pain relief. It knocks him out.
He's 18 years old and dumber than a box of rocks, but he is the sweetest, most cuddly creature ever. I call him my kitty pup because he follows me around like a dog.
I miss snuggling with him, but he's so dopey I don't want to disturb him. Poor guy!

(115,683 posts)I had an old cat once, Charles, who lived to be 21. He wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, either, but he was sweet and friendly and I loved him to pieces. Still miss him. Hope your old guy feels better soon.

(2,559 posts)And yes, he has gotten more sweet and cuddly as he's got older.
He was semi-feral when I got him, and really preferred spending most of his time outdoors. He was quite the hunter, bringing parts of rodents and squirrels in from time to time. Since I have a relatively secure yard, it was OK, but a couple of years ago I realized his deafness was causing him to become very apprehensive, and he was getting weak and debilitated. He had some sort of respiratory ailment where he lost his voice. For a Siamese, that's a big deal, LOL. And a younger tough tomcat was bullying him, and I imagine the raccoons and possums at night didn't make the greatest companions. So I put him on house arrest, to which he adjusted pretty well, as long as I keep his cat box clean and have his favorite canned food ready when he wants it. He does seem to sleep about 23 hours a day, but that's no big surprise. He would get startled when he suddenly realized someone was near, because he can't hear them approach, but he has gotten much less jumpy about that, now that he knows the inside of the home is a relatively safe place.
I do worry that he'll pass away alone one day, but 20 is probably like 96 in human years, so he's had a good long life.

(2,191 posts)After years of being babied along with failing/tiny old kidneys (our vets disagreed). He also lost a tooth, which made it easy to use the pill shooter to give him his meds. He tolerated being hydrated very well, and we did it for two years.
He was so old and frail, he spent most of his time on a heating pad. To keep him from getting confused and wandering at night, we set up a baby gate that friends gave us. We had to weave netting between the railings, because he was so skinny he could slip right through.
Sending best wishes to your little old man.

They are such good sports when they have issues like this.
Just heard about gabapentin and it sounds good to have a pain reliever for kitties now.

Thanks for taking such good care of him, and may he be back to himself in no time. Sending the best of vibes to him for Monday's procedure.
