So glad (new kitty now 1 yr. old)
I am so glad I did not listen to those vets! Was told my new kitty had herpes of the eyes, was chronically ill and that she'd need monthly vet visits for the rest of her life and that I should simply return her to the KILL shelter & be done w/her!
Here she is at one year old now!
She is happy and healthy now and Dr. CountAllVotes fixed her up with daily doses of echinacea , golden seal and l-lysine powder and lots of good food and love!
Of all of the cats/dogs I've adopted over the years, I've never seen one so very grateful to secure a loving home! She ran around the house spinning in circles of joy for the first 3 mos. I had her despite her horrific health condition.
Don't ever give up and please adopt from your local shelter to save a life! There is nothing more satisfying than to witness the results en-route to a happy, healthy secure life!

My doctor friend refers to them as one of her unusual "features".

growing up, we had a kitty who looked just like her - she was half Siamese.

Two litters came in at the same time for a total of 14 kittens. All were sick! 
Missy did not recover but the others did recover and were adopted out.
I went to the shelter and there she was in the isolation room and the next day would have been her last day to live but, I adopted her instead.
She is sweet and smart and gets along well with my two tomcats. She spends hours playing with them every day and they are happy to have her as they were sad after the horrific death of poor Miss Julie.
She loves all people and is a door greeter when anyone knocks. She is loving and retrieves if you throw a toy, she'll bring it right back and drop it at your feet or if in you are in bed, she'll bring it and drop it next to your hand. 
Luckily I arrived in the nick of time. NO regrets as all of the work & love have paid off and no sign of eye herpes thank god for that! Who needs that? I said NO and stuck to my guns on that DX. Idiots many of them are and no, we aren't going back anytime soon, that is my personal guarantee!

Congratulations on doing the RIGHT THING and that is to adopt a living kitty in such great need!
As for my other cats, I was not worried as whatever was wrong with Missy was never diagnosed. It was all a bunch of blow with no answers to be found except more pricey tests that would have given no answers. Whatever "it" was is gone and did not transfer to my two tomcats Andy & Silver (brothers age 4 years) luckily.
She needed a loving home and a lot of care and she was so good about it. I had to work like a dog on her crusty/weeping eyes w/blood running out of them with drops from here, there, everywhere it seemed.
The cycle finally broke (after seeing four vets) when I discovered she had tapeworms. I had the medication in Dr. CountAllVotes secret cat medicine cabinet and dosed her and the other two cats with medication to kill those damned tapeworms and I sterilized everything around here and tossed out the old litter boxes (there were three, one for each cat!) and replaced them. I'll tell you, chewy.com is a great company to deal with FYI - got four new big ones for >$20!
After she got rid of the worms it was all uphill after that. You'd think one of these brain dead vets would have checked for worms don't you think or was it easier to tell me to be rid of her and to hell with the FACT that she had worms. What fools!
Dr. CountAllVotes will be receiving an honorary "I Healed Missy" doctorate in the near future! 
He checked her up and down, inside and out, and made sure she was de-wormed. She was bottle-fed from birth because her mother rejected her and therefore a little under-nourished and small for her age. We kept our eyes on her health but she started to thrive as soon as I adopted her. Sometimes you have to go beyond the regular vet protocols and take matters into your own hands. That is what you are doing and why your kitty is recovering now. You're a wonderful kitty parent!
For a long five months is it was all she knew the poor thing.
She was freed from a hell hole and I am glad I was able to do that for her.

I was telling this young woman about her and she said it would have been wiser to adopt one that is being given away for free in front of a store in a box with others.
I disagreed with her and told her that Missy would have died the next day but she got lucky and got another chance to live. And so she did just that, LIVE.
A happy happy grateful girl she is believe me! She follows me everywhere and if I go out, she gets all upset and waits patiently in the window watching for the car to arrive back. She is very smart no doubt and has boundless quantities of love to give and wow can she purr up a storm! Her sleek black coat is like velvet! I almost named her that in fact, Velvet!
She was named after Missy #1 that I adopted via a newspaper ad in San Francisco in 1979 from a couple living on Ashbury street that were moving away. She lived to be seventeen years old and was a fine cat that just loved to eat! My late father made a cage for her and it is indestructible and he put a sign on the inside of the door that reads, "Ring Bell for Service". Love you Dad where ever you are in the after life and yes Dad, I still have that cage you made for "Missy" the cat that converted you dear old Dad to be a cat lover late in life.

They are highly unlikely to develop skin cancer being they are black!
Two of my cats that died in 2011/2012 were white and they had to have those awful cancerous lesions burned off their faces more than once. It was awful for them and as for the cost, we won't go there!
So a black cat is great to adopt in the era of climate change and who the hell ever heard of skin cancer on a cat ~50 years ago? Not I, that is for sure!
Missy was said to be a black and white cat being she has that white spot on her chest and now the new white rings around the teats!
But you are right sadly but I say adopt anyway whatever the color may be! At present, said KILL shelter has only adult black cats up for adoption. I hope they find homes!
