L.A. Times: What do I need to know to make my own cat food?

Have you ever seen a cat pick on an ear of corn? No.

10-20-17

There’s no shortage of recipes online and in cookbooks for homemade dog food, but what about the family cat?

Homemade cat food is a much trickier proposition. Recipes and resources are harder to come by, and some authorities disagree about what cats can, or cannot, consume.

Dr. Andrea Tasi, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, has specialized in cats for almost her entire 30-year career.

Her practice, Just Cats, Naturally, based in northern Virginia, uses homeopathy, nutritional therapy and behavior- and environmental-related techniques. She believes that switching a cat from processed foods to a raw or partially cooked diet is natural and might even improve its health.

Good spin on cat feeding and nutrition. Even if you don't or can't make your own it's good to know you can buy the next best thing.

making the healthiest and tastiest cat food you could ever imagine your cat will just say "Meh. I guess I'll eat it."

And the litter box will still stink.

And he will still try to kill you by tripping you down the stairs.

I know. I know too well.

she's a stray and used to fresh kill -- mice, insects, lizards.

If there's a chance I can preempt costly vet bills in the future by serving her a raw meat diet now, I'll make the effort.

It was much easier to do that for dogs, but the cats were occasionally interested, especially on mackerel or ground beef heart day. The dogs would lick the bowls to a shiny surface. I shied away from doing this for the cats b/c of the taurine issue.

I did not mean to offend you but cats do eat raw fresh corn. I swear.
I grew up on a farm and we had many cats and a huge garden.

Note, I'm holding back the sarcasm here. No, you did not make my day!! What kind of comment is that??

Best to stick to meat based food with little to no grain or vegetables.

Ferrets are the same (I'm a ferret owner). So I always make sure that all of his food is 99% meat based.
