We were supposed to pick up our new boxer puppy this Saturday. Instead the entire litter might die

This is the email we woke up to this morning:

The pups are not going to be ready as they have all had a reaction to the preventive(5-way vaccination) and they are all at the Vets. They are all very sick. We will need to see how they do. Sorry. You may call us if you wish, but I really don’t know any more than what I have told you. Hopefully they will get well.

Hopefully the vet can get them straightened out. I'm wondering if there was some kind of mistake made with the vaccinations? I've never heard of anything like this happening before.

Just looked at pic of daughter's Boxer, 2 years old, on her back, in the sun in the yard. Never did meet her when she was a pup, tho she still acts like one.

Our male boxer will be 2 in June. We are not planning on breeding, we just wanted a companion for our guy. We are going to get both of them fixed. Now we will probably lose her before we get her. We have paid a deposit and we are not sure what will happen next.

I pray the little ones will be okay. There are 5 of them. I wonder if there was something wrong with the vaccine? These people have had multiple litters and have used the same vet for years.

I'm soooo sorry! You must have been so looking forward to getting this puppy! How upsetting!

I gotta tell ya though... something seems very strange about this. I think there was some kind of mistake in what it was the pups were given. I can understand one or a couple of puppies having a bad reaction to a vaccine but the whole litter and so bad that it killed them???

I hope the breeder looks into that unless they're familiar with something like this happening. Damned if I've ever heard of such a thing before from a breeder or a vet.

having just picked up a new pup, i can very easily imagine how attached you were already. so sorry.
i wish i could point you to a breeder. only thing i can offer is- i don't know where you are, but i know that du'er beherenow lives next to a boxer breeder on the west coast.
i can keep my ears open, tho. i now know a lot of bully people, a few of whom are boxer people.

We recently got our Boston puppy from a breeder that was not up to par. She ran a mill that I later wrote the state about and turned in. Turns out hundreds of dogs had perished in this facility and many people are suing to get their deposits back. She is closed down now and is awaiting charges. I am so glad that my baby did not perish like so many other puppies.

I am so sorry to hear this. Give yourself some time to heal.

something else specific, there are dogs here that need homes.

http://www.petfinder.com/index.html

In the dropdowns on the left you can choose, dog, type in boxer and your zip code, and there may be a whole list.

One can find puppies, and 25% of the animals coming through shelters are purebred, if that is what you are looking for.

Sorry about your pup. We have had to deal with that before, though usually not from injection reactions. That's pretty infrequent, especially so many.

Adopting from a shelter saves lives.

I'd never buy a purebred dog (the dogs I had both had hip dysplasia and were purebreds; they were not bought but were rescue cases) as there are so many puppies and dogs waiting at shelters for good homes.

I'm sad to read this news and I feel for you, believe me. I've never heard of vaccinations causing a litter of pups to die I must admit!

Maybe adopting a new puppy from your local shelter would be an answer for you?

On edit: the above poster is quite correct -- many animals at shelters are indeed purebreds. The late Mr. Flame the cat was a prime example of such (purebred Flame Point Siamese cat he was adopted from a no-kill shelter).

Don't give up. This was just not meant to be. Give yourself time to get over this, then give some other pup a good home.

You might want to read this link
http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/veterinarian-ultimate-vaccine-authority/

I almost lost one of my newfs due to 1 injection of the rattlesnake vaccine. She developed AIHA. It has a 75% fatality rate. She was saved by awesome vets and lots of money but after that I started investigating vaccines.
There has been 14 Newfie pups (3 litters from 3 different breeders, pups not related) die from distemper after getting the pfizer. DNA from distemper in pups matched the distemper DNA in the only pups tested. Disease came from the vaccine. Yes it is possible with the MLV is made into distemper vaccine.

This was Pfizer 5- way MLV and Ft Dodge.
Everyone of these breeders are very reputable and one is even a vet tech. None are BYB or puppy mills and do not spit out pups yearly.
Below are 2 excerpts of breeders that lost pups. I have x'ed out names.

Breeder 1-Ft. Dodge (now known as pfizer/wyeth). 5 way. This was the first mistake the vet made, I had ordered in the Merial Recombetex for my 8 pups. The vet did not see this in the chart and gave a vaccine I would never have allowed had I known. The second vaccine reaction (the pup that did not die) was given at 12 weeks (her second in the puppy series) was to the Merial, this pup was however compromised and likely reacted to the hep or a component in the adjuvent. She was immediately given dex and was brought out of the reaction and her life spared. She is however, not normal.

Breeder 2- were done with a 5 way at just a couple of days short of 9 weeks...and were dead ten days later.Breeder 3- pups were done at 8 wks with the recombinant distemper, and it was at their (approx.) 12 week booster, which was done (MISTAKENLY) with MLV instead, that they were affected. And yes..same vaccine company, same vaccine, but two years apart. (oddly, almost to the DAY). Breeder 3-, I believe, was a different company, and the first shot, but the course of the disease was not quite the same for hers. With mine and XXXXXX, it was almost IDENTICAL...which is why the breeder had me make contact with her in the first place.

Yes I vaccinate but now only use

Having talked to Jean Dodds and was told ONLY use this.

I have a 6 week old pup now that is allowed no outside visitors until her first vaccine. That will be at 10 weeks. My vet has ordered the vaccine Dr. Dodds recommended. I will breath a sigh of relief after puppy shot is done.

Six puppies, mother at Toledo-area Humane Society (Dave Zapotosky/The Blade via AP)

What could be more adorable than six bulldog puppies sitting in a suitcase? As cute as the above photo is, it has a less-than-heartening beginning.

An Ohio man has been charged with animal abandonment after Humane Society authorities matched his name with a suitcase in which the six puppies had been trapped. The suitcase, allegedly belonging to Howard Davis, 53, had been left next to a garbage can in a Toledo alleyway.

The puppies were discovered after someone noticed their mother pacing around the closed suitcase.

Toledo Area Humane Society spokeswoman Cyndi Condit told Reuters that Davis lives only two blocks from where the puppies were found.

If you like boxers, try to get a boxer mix. It will have the good qualities of a boxer but most likely without whatever genetic defects boxers are prone to these days. (And just about all purebreds have problems.)
