I didn't realize this was a thing until I googled and it seems like a good idea for those of us with super chewers. They love bones but they have to have real bones and not raw hide. So they spend a long time licking all the flavoring off and chewing out the marrow but then they are left with a hollow, plain bone. Any of them that start to chip get tossed as they will eat the little pieces and that's not good.
Some people refill with a mix of dog food and peanut butter. Or oatmeal. Pumpkin. I think the pumpkin might be a good idea since it's not as fattening or messy. The key is freezing the bones so the goo doesn't fall out all over the place. I also read you can soak them in broth to add some flavor.
Anybody done this and have any advice?

(33,048 posts)Alex & Peanut were serious chewers & both broke teeth. Duke was a lick the peanutbutter dog. When I would reuse the beef marrow bones I would place then upright in a cleaned empty maragine cup, put the PB & twice I used a high quality dogfood. I filled & froze the bones. I only let the dogs have them in the yard or kitchen, easy to wash if it got messy.
Please do check your dogs teeth regularly. Pulling teeth & post removal care was costly.
We use left over sweet potato, carrot or broccoli. We use the filling straight with no peanut butter or dog food and the girls love it.
