My 70-lb dog ate 3 raisins.

Is he going to have kidney failure? Most internet sites indicate grapes are like rat poison to dogs, but there's no indication of how many will be damaging. From what I've read, they're talking large amounts of raisins - in the 50-100 range for his body weight - as being lethal. He's not vomiting, though he has been battling diarrhea all week (prior to the raisin eating).

Any recommendations/experiences/reputable web sites I might consult about this?

Of course I love my dog fanatically and am losing sleep over this. Thanks for your input.

I doubt it will cause a problem. For your own peace of mind though, I guess you could call someone livetohike Apr 2012 #2

But what I've read is that it depends on the dog. My suggestion would be to call your vet or animal emergency clinic and ask them for symptoms you should be looking for and they may be able to put your mind at ease. There's also ASPCA Poison Control, spent most of the night on the phone with them when my other dog got into chocolate. They have lists of every kind of toxicities. Good luck!

I'd call the vet even if the only reason is to just put my mind at ease. I can't even count the number of times I've called the vet and started the conversation with "This is probably really stupid, but..." LOL! Bless them, they always assure me that there are no stupid questions and it's always better to call than not to.

All of my big beasties have on occasion managed to sneak very small amounts of chocolate but they were fine (damn m&m's are slippery suckers, and I often manage to lose a couple to the floor). If one of them ever managed to eat an entire bar of pure chocolate I'd be worried and call the vet though.

with authority to answer this question. My husband fed our dogs pieces of oatmeal/raisin cookies for years (before we ever heard about the grape/raisin problem). They were Lab/Shepherd mixes so they weighed between 65-75 lbs. One lived to be 13.5 and the other was a few weeks away from his 16th birthday and he did die of kidney failure, but he was pretty old for his breed.

I was panicked over the fact that the two dogs I have now ate a whole bag of those Snicker miniature chocolate bars one Halloween!! They never did get sick and they are both 9 years old now .

Hope these anecdotes help ....I worry about everything even though I've had dogs my whole life and will be 60 years old this year .

No problems with 3 raisins for 70 pound dog. If your still concerned call your vet.

Dog got up this morning, ate well, peed well, is drinking plenty of water, seems completely fine. I think I was panicking because I had a dog die of kidney failure once (some neighborhood asshole poisoned four neighborhood dogs). It was very traumatic! At least that experience taught me what to watch for vis-a-vis kidney problems.

I'll keep watching him over the next 24-hours, but I do appreciate everyone's input and the links provided. Thanks, DUers!

Before we got the fencing up around the garden. She also got her share of tomatoes, onions and even a large jalapeno, stem and all.
