The mayor of a town in northern France has issued a ban on excessive dog barking in a bid to curb canine noise pollution.
From Monday, dog owners in Feuquières face a 68 (£60; $77) fine for "prolonged or repeated barking".
Mayor Jean-Pierre Estienne says the ban is in response to dogs "barking day and night" and creating "an unbearable situation" in the village.
The decree has been criticised by animal rights activists.
"The aim is not to ban dogs and we won't be fining people for the slightest hint of a yap," Mr Estienne told French newspaper Le Parisien (in French).

(28,394 posts)People who let their dogs bark day and night are most likely neglecting those dogs. Dogs are social creature and need human interaction!!

(25,853 posts)The incessant barking. I've been tempted to make a two hour recording, then find a way to blast it into the neighbor's bedroom at 2am.
That and people assume everyone else of course loves their dog so they take it everywhere. Look, I don't take my cat or my pet iguana everywhere, so you likewise should leave your non human companion home.

(28,817 posts)The dispatcher could hear the dogs barking when I called inthe report. The dogs were still barking when the officer arrived about 30 minutes later. They barked the whole time he talked to me.
Our neighbor was warned. When that didnt work it was $150. When that didnt work it went up to $300. Finally they kept them in their house. They still barked but not loud enough for fines. They had someone dog sit once and I heard him yell Dont they ever shut up? They finally moved away. Yay!

(2,860 posts)I found him at the pound, but I have no idea what breed he is. He's really old now too. Our vet guesses he's 13 or 14 years old. As for incessant barking, you just need to pay attention. There are lots of dogs in our neighborhood. Most of us get out there and bring our dogs back in, or tend to them to stop the barking. If you walk them a lot and give them plenty of attention it's not hard to stop the barking. A tired dog is a good dog.
My dog Samson is the one in the middle of this photo:

(2,860 posts)Now I'm wondering if he isn't some sort of pure bred dog. I always tell people that I think he's chow mixed with rough collie, but I really don't know for sure. I guess I'll have to sign him up for one of those DNA test on Ancestry.

(2,860 posts)Samson fit through the cat door on my dog gate the first day we brought him home. He put on a lot of weight after that because he was neutered and then given steroids for a few months. He was a strong positive for heart worm when we got him out. Samson only weighs about 65 lbs right now. The most he ever weighed was 85 lbs. I used to work at a dog daycare and there was a Newfoundland there. She was huge. She probably weighed around 110 pounds and was very tall. I suppose Samson could have some Newfoundland in him though. Either that or he's a giant pomeranian.

(22,063 posts)Its a Great Pyrenees' job. They're always on patrol--when they're outside, and not lounging around. Most of the time, they're inside hanging out with us. Wherever we are, that's where they want to be. But we're in the country on a farm. The closest neighbors have a pack of dogs that bark much more.
I can understand why people would object in closer confines. I would too.
