ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York has become the first state to ban the declawing of cats.
The measure was signed into law Monday by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo after lawmakers passed it in the spring.
Animal welfare advocates and many veterinarians say the once-common operation is unnecessary and cruel. It involves slicing through bone to amputate the first segment of a cat's toes.
New York's largest veterinary organization had opposed the bill. It argued that declawing should remain a last resort for cats that won't stop scratching furniture or humans.

(6,644 posts)But I saw him climb a tree and beat up a dog with his rear claws. It may be painful for a cat but he wasn't left helpless. He was willing to take on any big dog especially if I were around. And he still was very loving and kind to my daughter.

(14,559 posts)He didn't 'snach n grab' like cats with claws do. He developed a powerful round house punch with follow through. Knocked my schnauzer to the floor!
I don't believe in de clawing and there is an alternative,; Soft Paws. Not the only supplier but easiest to find on the net. It's fake claws that slide on over the claws with super glue. Trim the claw and glue it on. When the claw grows out they fall off, no harm to the pet. Comes in lots of colors, protects furniture and costs about $10 a year.

(11,686 posts)Most cats do not like the feel of it. Lots and lots of scratch posts particularly with sisal rope. Scratching boards for the floor. I know it is a vacuuming mess but there are scratchin boards with card board and some love it. I would never declaw any cat just as I would never dock a dogs tail or clip their ears.

(20,878 posts)He made big 20 lb. cat posts that sure get a work out around here with my three cats.
He isn't doing it anymore and I was advised to recover the existing posts.
I have the sisal but I do not know where to begin.
How do you get the old stuff off and glue (this is their recommendation) the new sisal on with hot glue and tacks (????).
I have two of these big posts and I hope they last a long time because I don't know where I will find another one that is big and sturdy and I have no idea how to recover one of them.
Sisal is the way to go I agree btw!
I would NEVER de-claw a cat!

(34,451 posts)Any vet willing to put cats through that unnecessary pain and trauma is somebody I wouldn't allow anywhere near my spoiled ones.
You have to seriously question the mind of someone that would do such a cruel thing I agree!
