Rufus finally got his operation. After several months of thinking

this stray fellow was already neutered, the vet found both testicles. One was underneath a kidney, and the other was in the interior near where it should have been on the outside. Poor fellow had a 3 hr surgery and now has a nice long scar. He had to wear a lampshade and stay at the vet's office for a week. He is happy to be home. Rufus is a very sweet guy and we are hoping he will settle down so we can bring him into our fold. For now, he has a house on the screened in porch. He beat up one of my spayed female cats last year, so we will re-introduce him to our tribe very gradually.

ETA: Vet thinks he is about 4-5 yrs. old. He tested negative for FIV/FELV. He is now fully vetted.

I can see why the vet would do some further exploration of hidden testicles.

it is impossible to tell whether they are neutered or not. Sometimes when cats show up at the county AC, the staff will mark them as females when they are actually neutered males. It's not easy to tell, esp with scared or feral cats. Rufus appeared to be a fully developed male, but had no visible signs of it.

I'll bet he's happy to be home. Hope he settles in peacefully.
